Lumberjacking is used to gather logs, which can be sold at a Carpentry Shop or sawn into planks using the Milling skill. You can also cut kindling, which you may sell at a Provisioner Shop or use to build a campfire.

To gather logs, you must have a Lumberjack Axe and stand next to a tree with leaves on it.

Tree Lumber

Double-click on the axe, then select the tree. If the area you are in has been depleted of wood resources, you’ll be told that. Move a short distance away and try again. Otherwise, after two seconds of wood-chopping sounds, you’ll be told whether you’ve collected a log or not. The odds of success are 75% plus 1/2 of your skill level plus 1/6 of your Strength.

Logs are worth 2, so you’ll get about 1 if you sell them at the Carpentry Shop. Carpenters can use logs as raw material for some of their early carpentry projects. Millers can saw logs into the planks which Carpenters need for their more advanced projects. To gather kindling, you must have a Lumberjack Axe and stand next to a dead tree (one with no leaves on it).

Dead Tree

Double-click on the axe, then select the tree. If the area you are in has been depleted of wood resources, you’ll be told that. Move a short distance away and try again. Otherwise, after two seconds of wood-chopping sounds, you’ll be told whether you’ve collected kindling or not. The odds of success are 75% plus 1/2 of your skill level plus 1/6 of your Strength. Kindling is worth 2, so you’ll get about 1 if you sell it at the Carpentry Shop. You can also use kindling to build a campfire.

Chopping wood and kindling eventually wears out your axe. Single-click on your axe to see what kind of shape it’s in: new, slightly used, worn out, etc. A new axe costs 200 at a Carpentry Shop, and lasts an average of 200 swings before breaking (unless it gets repaired with the Wood Repair skill). Making A Campfire To start a campfire, drop a piece of kindling on the ground next to you and then double click on it.

This always succeeds, no skill is involved, and it doesn’t earn you any experience. You can cook on a campfire the same way you cook on a stove in town. The campfire will last for 1.5 hours of game time, but you can replenish it when it starts to go out by using another piece of kindling on it from your backpack.
